West Pend Oreille Fire District Chief Jamie Painton announced the graduation of two volunteers from the recent Fire Academy Ceremony held at Newport Highschool. The graduates were Nigel Cave and Rick O’Neal shown in a picture working a recent structure fire in Newport when called on for mutual aid.![]()
The Fire Academy was attended by four local Fire Departments; West Pend Oreille Fire District, South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue, Pend Oreille Fire Districts 2 and 4. The lead instructors were Kyle Stutzman and Corey Toombs with SPOFR for the class that started in February. In addition, Adam Micone of FD 4 was the Co-Ordinator for the class.![]()
The Fire Academy focused on Firefighter Skills, Search and Rescue, Extrication, and Wildland firefighting. ![]()
Chief Painton said, "Congratulations on your hard work in completing Firefighter 1, and I am very proud of you for your accomplishments."![]()

Wild Fire Training
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Brian Evans, Assistant Fire Warden for the Idaho Department of Lands, kicked off a training session on April 22nd for the West Pend Oreille Fire District.![]()
Brian said, “We value our partnership with West Pend Oreille Fire District. We are set up for success when these volunteers respond.”
The class instructors were Lizz Bloxsom, Lands Resource Foreman, and Ryan Bantley, an FFT1/ICT5, Fire Fighter 1, and Incident Command 5.![]()
The picture shows the volunteers in training on the ground in fire shelters being inspected by the instructors. The fire shelter protects an endangered firefighter primarily by reflecting radiant heat and trapping breathable air for the firefighter shown on the ground inside the shelter.![]()
This training by The Idaho Land Management team focused on the initial attack, fire size up fundamentals, incident name, fire size, calling in Latitude and Longitude, values at risk, additional resources needed, incident commander and aerial operations.
